Bert was the son of Sampson and Ellen "Nellie" Bunney Jeffery.

He was born in Cornwall, England and came to America with his family and spent his early years in Lead, South Dakota.

When grown he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served for eight years (1925 to 1934) in the Expeditionary Forces in China.

He married Clara Belle Renfrow on May 14, 1934 in Muncie, Indiana. They had one daughter, (Joann) born in 1935.

Bert died in a boating accident on Clear Lake in Lydick, Indiana on Memorial Day 1957.
