Ellen had five children by her first husband Sampson Jeffery. He died and was buried at sea in 1904. She also lost a son (Leonard Jeffery) to pneumonia at the age of two years, in 1897. The other four children were: Emma "Helen" Jeffery Johnson, Florence May Jeffery Carlson, Percy Lewis Jeffery and Herbert Redvers "Bert" Jeffery.

In 1914 she married Henry James. One child was born to them (Clarence Kenneth James) and that child died at one and one-half years old in 1916, of anemia. Henry James died in 1926. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Ellen came from a Methodist background and had belonged to the Bible Christian Connection before she immigrated to the United States. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
