Harold E. Claar, 87, a former White Bird area packer and mail carrier, died Wednesday of causes related to age at Syringa General Hospital here.

He was born June 5, 1908, at Topeka, Kan., to Harry and Pearl Pickens Claar. In 1912 the family moved to Jerome, Idaho, where he went to school.

He then farmed and operated steam engines and threshing machines. He married Marjorie Redeye in 1930. They were later divorced.

In 1942 he moved to Doumecq Plains, above White Bird, where he ranched until 1958. He delivered mail from White Bird to Doumecq, Deer Creek and Slate Creek. He was a packer for the U.S. Forest Service at Red River Ranger Station for several years before retiring.

He married Nina Dearing May 21, 1962, at Weiser. She died in 1983.

He enjoyed working with mules and playing cards.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne and Willis Claar, both of White Bird; one step-daughter, Patricia Bentz of McCall; one sister, Audrey Hansen of Jerome; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

One son, one daughter, one brother, one sister and a granddaughter died previously.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the I.O.O.F. Hall at White Bird. Private burial will take place at White Bird Cemetery. Noland Funeral Home at Grangeville is making the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Grangeville Senior Citizens Center.
