ABINGDON - Mr. Charles Robinson Collins, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Collins was a longtime active member of Abingdon United Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley Bible class there. He was also a member of Abingdon Civitan Club.

Mr. Collins was a retired trooper with the Virginia State Police, having served for 35 years. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Allene Armentrout Collins; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. (Bill) Collins and Merry B. Collins of Mechanicsville, Va.; a daughter, Beth Daughety of Reston, Va.; grandchildren, Courtney Merrill, Devon Daughety, Susan Daughety and Craig Daugherty; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Merrill and Austyn Merrill; two nephews, Bob Ayers and wife, Sue, of Rural Retreat, Va., and Charles E. Shockley and wife, Sandra, of Wytheville; and the in-laws of the W.S. Armentrout Family.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland and Rev. Betty Reiff officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at West End Cemetery in Wytheville with the Virginia State Police Color Guard providing honors.

Casketbearers will be Dwight Alley, Joe Phipps, Eddy Gray, Fred St. John, Eddie Jonas, Russell Young, Tammy Farnsworth and Harry Cuskey. Honorary casketbearers will be active and retired members of the Virginia State Police and all the members of Wesley Bible class of Abingon United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the famly asks that memorial donations be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
