Harriett "Babe" Abramsen, 92, of Manistique, Michigan passed away on August 8, 2012 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan.
She was born March 29, 1920 in Manistique, Michigan the daughter of Harry and Anna (Olsen) Abramsen. She attended Manistique area schools and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1938.
Following high school, Harriett moved to Detroit and went to work for the General Motors Corporation. In 1943 she joined the U.S. Navy (WAVES), serving in World War II from 1943-1945, as a decoder. She then attended the Detroit Business Institute where she pursued a secretarial course, taking a job as a legal secretary with a Detroit law firm.
When the Korean War started, she was called up and she returned to Washington, performing secretarial duties at the Pentagon. She was there from 1951-1953. She then returned to Detroit and took a job as a recording secretary for the City of Detroit Water Department. She moved back to Manistique in 1978 following her retirement.
Upon returning home, she and some friends went back to "writing" school in Escanaba. Harriett wrote the memories column in the Pioneer-Tribune for many years.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, the Ida Chapter #54 Order of the Eastern Star in Manistique, the GFWC Manistique Women's Club, the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility Auxiliary, the Manistique Senior Citizens and the Schoolcraft Historical Society. She was also a member of the WAVES International Unit #137 and the AMVETS.
She is survived by her sister-in-law; Margaret Abrahamsen of Appleton, WI; nieces and nephews: Kay (Ron) Schulze of Menasha, WI, Connie (Doug) Russell of Green Bay, WI, Ken Abrahamsen of Fitchburg, WI, Ann (Joe) Nolen of Roseville, MI, Bo (Christine) Schoffer of Spanaway, WA, David Schoffer of Roseville, MI and Donald Schoffer of Manistique. She is further survived by many great and great-great nieces and nephews, and even a great-great-great niece and nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Arlene Abramsen in 1938, Helen Southard in 1979, and Eleanore Schoffer in 2001; and her brother, Richard Abrahamsen in 1999.
The staff at the Jacobetti Home become Harriett's second family and she was appreciative of the care and compassion they gave her. She always said, "They have good food and are very good to me." Her family was also very appreciative of the care she received.
Babe was a special Aunt to her nieces and nephews; she provided all of them with special memories of her and with her. She will truly be missed by all of us.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 pm, Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique.
Funeral services will follow at 2:30 pm, at the church with Reverend David Hueter officiating.
Burial with veteran honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Schoolcraft Humane Society.
