Alma was the daughter of Hubert Berger and Aglaee Gislaine. Her parents immigrated to America from Belgium where they were born. She married Verne Eugene Hughey on 6 Jun 1920 in Pittsburg, Kansas. They had 1 son:

Ernest Eugene "Gene" (b. 29 Mar 1921 in Pittsburg, Crawford, KS) m. Miriam Unknown.

Alma was always her husband's helper in his two bakery shops he owned in California. Before she was married she worked at the car and train depots on the food counters and also clerked in a dairy goods department of Fred Harveys in Kansas City. Alma was a big help to the Author Dorothy L. Taylor of "Blenkarn Tapestry" in getting the Hughey's written up in the book.
