Betty Bailey (as she was then known) was the first woman to complete flight training at West Virginia University and the only female in her class. She applied to the "Woman Air Force Service Program" (WASP). In 1944 she received a telegram from General "Hap" Arnold accepting her into the program and ordering her to report to Avenger Field at Sweetwater, Texas. She was a member of Trainee Class 44-6.
She was a proud Veteran of World War 2 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium with full military honors on March 6, 1997.
