James "Jimmie" Robert Wedell was well-known in the 1930's as a racing pilot and airplane builder. Son of Robert C. and Ida Wedell, his siblings were Walter and Elizabeth. Robert Wedell operated a bar on the Texas City waterfront. The family lived on ten acres of land located at 9th St and 4th Ave South known as Wedell's Corner. Jimmie met his wife Mae in Port Arthur, Texas. In 1927, Jimmie and his brother Walter moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. I found the old original photo of Jimmie Wedell in some of my grandfathers things. He was a friend of Jimmie Wedell. My grandmother told me once she took a place ride in an open air cockpit and remembered she had left beans cooking on the stove. Since they were neighbors in New Orleans in the early 1920's, I bet she flew with Jimmie.

James R. Wedell (pronounced WE-dell) died in a plane crash on June 24, 1934 at the age of 34. By then his reputation as a designer, builder and pilot was well known throughout the country. His Gypsy Moth Trainer plane crashed while Wedell was giving flying lessons to a student. The student survived the crash.

James Wedell's funeral was held in New Orleans, and he is buried in the Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia, Texas
