He was a son to Michael S. and Kimberly S. Gerding Custer, who survive in Lima. His fiancée, Jami R. Lauf, survives.

Gerding, Lima; paternal grandparents, Darrell and Ruby Custer, Fort Myers, FL; an uncle, Greg (Stephanie) Gerding, Columbus; an aunt, Tracy (Brett) Febus, Columbus; six cousins, Mitchell and Gia Winters, Reilly Gerding and Emily, Olivia and Brandon Febus; and his beloved dog, Bella.
Deceased is a maternal grandfather, Kenneth J. Gerding.
He was a 2007 graduate of Shawnee High School. He enjoyed playing basketball, football and baseball. His favorite pastimes included fishing, cooking and spending time with family, especially the younger kids. He dearly loved animals. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds and The Ohio State University Buckeyes.
