VELMA — Sept. 3, 1919 — Jan. 15, 2012
Mr. Robert E. "R.E." Corbin, a lifelong resident of Velma, peacefully passed away on Sunday evening, Jan. 15, 2012, at the Healdton Mercy Hospital, at the age of 92. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Heritage Oaks Church of the Nazarene in Duncan. Interment will follow at Duncan City Cemetery under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home. Visitation will be fro, 1 to 7 p.m. today.
R.E. was born Sept. 3, 1919, near Tussy, to Robert E. and Dora (Potts) Corbin. He proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 850th Infantry as an Aviation Engineer. R.E. was among the thousands who landed on Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944 on D-day and served overseas for four more years without leave, and he fought in seven major battles in Europe. Upon his return to America, the troops saw the Statue of Liberty and began applauding, being very thankful to be returning to their home.
On May 30, 1946 he and Zelma Ross were united in marriage at Marietta. His grandson taught him to love football, his granddaughter taught him to love basketball and he was an avid fan of the University of Oklahoma Sooners.
He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Zelma, of the home; four children, Linda Gayle Robertson, Velma, Dennis G. Corbin and wife, Janice, of Flower Mound, Texas, Gary Corbin and wife, Lula, of Austin, Texas, and Wanda Crook and husband, Danny, of Velma; 10 grandchildren, Lori Johnson and husband, Andrew, Pam Robertson, Carolyn Aldridge, Dennis Don Corbin and wife, Lisa, Jason Corbin, Crystal Glaszczak and husband, Bryan, Jay Fuller, Christopher Corbin, Jody Crook and Tracy Crook; 17 great- and great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and close friends.
R.E. was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Glen Dale Corbin, Floella Sue Corbin and Dorris Corbin; one brother; and two sisters.
