George Oldfield, 61, a British police officer who led the five-year hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, died Thursday at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
The investigation led to the arrest of Peter Sutcliffe, 37, a former truck driver. Sutcliffe pleaded guilty to killing 13 young women and to the attempted murder of seven others over a five-year period in Yorkshire and neighboring counties. He is now serving a life sentence in Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight.
Mr. Oldfield was assistant chief constable in West Yorkshire in charge of the criminal-investigation division during the manhunt. After Sutcliffe was caught in 1981, Mr. Oldfield was transferred to a less strenuous post. He took an early retirement two years ago because of ill health. Published in the Philadelphia Inquirer (PA) on July 6, 1985.
