George was born in Greene County, Ky, on Sept. 24, 1867, the son of Stewart and Sarah A. Burks Vanlandingham. He spent the first 18 years of his life in Kentucky before moving to Illinois. He married Mary Jane McGary in Athens, IL, on Feb. 22, 1891. They had 6 sons and 4 daughters:

Jeremiah (Jerry)- 1892
Arthur William- 1895 - 1958
Roy Elva- 1898-1914
Nina Marie- Apr 27, 1900 - Jan 23, 1923
Viola- 1902
Earl E.- 1904
Harold- 1908 - Oct 1974
Chester T.- Feb 11, 1913-Jan 12, 1969
Dorothy M.- 1917

He died at home on May 7, 1945. He was survived by his wife, Mary, children Arthur of Greenview, IL, Harold and Earl of Easton, IL, Chester of Avalon, WI, Mrs. Mabel Hines of Astoria, IL, Mrs. Viola Greene of Havana, Mrs. Dorothy Parks, 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by children Jerry, Roy, and Nina.

Memorial services were conducted at Havana Methodist Church on May 9th, 1945 at 2:00 pm by Rev. Gordon White.
Mrs. Mabel Wiseman and Mrs. Modelle Anno sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", "Whispering Hope" and "Nearer my God to Thee".

Casket bearers were Willard Centers, Lee Flaharty, Park Rice, Chester Smith, Newton Kennedy, and Sheldon Morris.
Flower bearers were Mrs. Maxine Barrett, Mrs. Florine Moore, Miss Fay Vanlandingham, Miss Violet Green, and Miss Helen Dacust.
