Death of Capt. Ballard, Honored Citizen of Lakeland Passes Away.

Capt. L. M. Ballard died at his residence on Pine Street last evening at about seven o'clock. The death of Capt. Ballard came as a great surprise and shock to this community. He had been ill for some time, and it was even known to a few that his complete recovery was very doubtful, but no one thought the end so near, and when the wor, passed around last evening "Capt. Ballard is dead," there was universal expression of sorrowful surprise.

Capt. Ballard was one of Lakeland's first citizens and through out the history of the town had been closely identified with its history and politics. He had held officers county and municipal and at the time of his death was a member of the city council and a candidate for representative. He was born at Lake City, September 24, 1845, and had been a citizen of this county for twenty-eight years."
