Alfred Briscoe enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 15 November 1915 and embarked for active service abroad on 9 April 1916. He was wounded in action 14 November 1916. He returned to Australia on board HMAT "Karmala" arriving in Melbourne on 17 August 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 10 October 1919. He was accidentally killed in a mining accident, aged 35 years.

Copy of letter (Officer In Charge Base Records AIF, Victoria Barracks) sent to Alfred's wife, Clara 19th June, 1919 –
"I have much pleasure in forwarding hereunder copy of extract from Fifth Supplement, No. 31089 to the ‘London Gazette' dated 27th December, 1918 relating to the conspicuous services rendered by the undermentioned member of the Australian Imperial Force.
MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES
The following is a continuation of Sir DOUGLAS HAIG's Despatch of the 8th November, 1918 submitting names deserving of special mention:-
No. 4370 Corporal A. E. BRISCOE
The above has been promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No. 61, dated 23rd May, 1919."

He was one of six brothers who served in the Great War.
