Marguerite "Sis" E. Battermann, 93, of Crete died Sunday, July 11, 2010. She was born September 12, 1916, in Monee, the daughter of Edward and Minnie Lessnow Vehrs. She and her husband farmed east of Monee for over 30 years before moving to Crete. She formerly drove school buses for the Crete-Monee School District. She retired from Sears in Park Forest and, until the age of 85, worked part time at the Crete Pharmacy. She loved to quilt, work with flowers, word-find puzzles, and play bunco. She was a member of the Crete United Methodist Church and the Southland Senior Citizens of Monee. Mrs. Batterman is survived by two daughters, Shirley Younker of Peotone and Marjory the late Carl Forbes of Mahomet; a son, Herbert Mary Ann E. Battermann Jr. Of Peotone; five grandchildren, Beth Ellen Alan Thiesfeld, Pamela Michael Ziegler, Brian Jennifer Forbes, Herbert E. Battermann III and Holly Battermann; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Vehrs of Glen Flora, Wis., and Clem Vehrs of Manteno; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert E. Battermann, on November 27, 1974, they were married on July 29, 1934 in Crown Point, Ind.; and nine siblings, Gertrude Muehring, Mildred Kvasnicka, Imogene Parzygnot, Avanelle Vehrs, Joanne Bowen, Jerome Vehrs, Edward Vehrs, Wallace Vehrs and Herschel Vehrs who died in infancy. Visitation 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at Crete Funeral Home. Funeral Friday, July 16 at the funeral home. Burial in Zion Ev. Lutheran Cemetery in Crete.
