"The large westward bend of the bayou below Gaines is known as Tatum Bend. Edward Tatum settled in this area by 1860 with his wife, Martha, and three children, Camillus, Annie and Briscoe. A Methodist preacher, Samuel Hawes, with his wife, Sarah, and two children, William and Lizzie, were in the Tatum household."
