Houlsworth Harper, one of the oldest residents of Greene county, died at his home in Carmichaels Friday evening, November 29, aged 88 years. His death was due to infirmities incident to old age. Mr. Harper was born in Cumberland township and was a son of Samuel and Jane McMillan Harper and a grandson of the late Dr. John McMillan, founder of Washington and Jefferson college.
He received his education at the old Greene Academy in Carmichaels and later engaged in farming, at which he was very successful.
In 1862 Mr Harper was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca M Johnson. No children were born to this union. Mr. Harper was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church and always took an active part in all church work. He was a staunch Republican and although he never held any office he was a loyal supporter of the party interests. After the death of his wife in 1901 he resided with his niece, Mrs. Margaret Stone, of Carmichaels.
The funeral services were held on Saturday at 1 pm in the ME church, conducted by Rev H O McDonald. Interment in the Carmichaels cemetery.
