Prior to the Civil War, Joseph Agnew was a member of the Illinois Militia, 59th Regiment, 4th Brigade, 5th Division, under the command of Colonel Levi Williams. Sgt. Agnew was married twice. His first wife was Mary Ann (Welch) Agnew (1830-1850). Joseph and Mary Ann were married on January 1, 1846 in Hancock County, Illinois. Joseph's second wife was Elgiva S. (Barnum) Agnew (1832-1870). Joseph and Elgiva were married on May 15, 1859 in Hancock County, Illinois. Joseph was the father of at least two children with Mary Ann - Perry Brant and Mary Maria Agnew. He was the father of at least four children with Elgiva - William, Katherine, Joseph and Georgia Agnew. He was the son of Brant Agnew and Ann Catherine (Myers) Agnew.
