Ralph D. STAPLETON, 77, of 221 S. Washington St., Mount Union, died at 9:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a serious illness. Born Aug. 31, 1924, in Cass Township, Huntingdon County, near Calvin, he was a son of the late Charles and Edith (Chilcote) Stapleton. He married Nora C. McCavitt July 12, 1952. She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1980. He then married Anna Mae (Jacoby) Gerholt Dec. 27, 1986. Mrs. Stapleton survives at home, along with the following stepchildren: Lewis J. Gerholt, McConnellsburg; Georgianna M. Gerholt, Mount Union; Paula S. White, Waldorf, Md.; and Trish A. Reck of Allenport, Mount Union. There are eight step-grandchildren. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Earl Harris, Cleo (Harris) Guyton, Zada (Harris) Shafer, Katheryn (Harris) Shirley, Raymond Stapleton and Marshall Stapleton. Mr. Stapleton attended the Mount Union Wesleyan Church. Following high
school, he attended trade school in Allentown to learn small motor repair. He retired as a foreman in 1974 with 20 years of service in the machine shop at Letterkenney Army Depot in Chambersburg. He was also self-employed as a small motor repairman for many years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe, including southern France and Normandy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Rod Uhlig officiating. Interment will be made in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Shirleysburg, RD. 1.
