U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to New York in 1856, he later obtained a formal education, taught school for several years and moved to Indiana, in 1869. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1873 and commenced to practice law in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was prosecuting attorney for the eleventh judicial circuit of Indiana (1880-84), and elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving (1893-95). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
