U.S. Congressman. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he moved to Petersburg, Indiana, in 1828; engaged in mercantile pursuits, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law. He was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1831-32, 1836-38). In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843. After his term, he was appointed by President Tyler as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Brazil, serving (1843-44). He died on his birthday at age 40 in Louisville, Kentucky.
