Hugh Appleton, 60, Caught In Fall At Refractories Mine
CURWENSVILLE - Caught under a fall of 30 tons of rock while working at the North American Refractories Company coal mine near Glen Richey, Hugh Appleton, 60, of Curwensville, was instantly killed Monday at 10:40 a.m.
A crew of 30 men dug into the rock until 3:40 yesterday afternoon before Appleton's badly crushed body was recovered.
Coroner R.L. Williams of Houtzdale was to investigate the accident today.
Company officials said Appleton and George Mayersky were working together, removing pillars from the operation when the rock fell. Appleton shouted a warning to Mayersky just before the fall occurred. Mayersky was uninjured.
Appleton had worked for the company for 23 years.
He was born April 11, 1886, a son of John and Catherine Kline Appleton, both of whom are deceased. Surviving are his widow, Mary, and seven children: Mrs. Havard Bloom, Curwensville; Mrs. Harold Graham, Pittsburgh; Mrs. James Hamm, Curwensville; Hugh Jr., Miles, Ivan and Larry, all at home. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and five sister. Two children preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, from the Liniger Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul E. Dale officiating. Interment in the Bloomington Cemetery. There will be no viewing of the body.
