Former Bradford Woman Easts Canned Mushrooms, Dies in Olean Hospital
Mrs. Ormel Dean, formerly Miss Agnes Powell of Bradford, died in the Higgins Memorial hospital, Olean, Sunday from ptomaine poisoning as the result of eating canned mushrooms.
Mr. and Mrs. Dean ate mushrooms bought from a local dealer the previous Tuesday night and shortly after supper they were taking suddenly ill. It is believed that they both lost consciousness before they had time to summon medical aid for they were not found until the following morning when Mr. Dean’s parents, who called for a visit, found Mrs. Dean lying across her bed and Mr. Dean on the bathroom floor. Both were unconscious.
They were rushed to the hospital where they soon recovered consciousness and told of eating the mushrooms. Mr. Dean improved rapidly due to his stronger constitution and the fact that he had not eaten as much of the poison food as his wife. He is now able to be about. Mrs. Dean’s condition was serious and little hope of her recovery was held.
The deceased was well known both in Olean and in Bradford.
Funeral services were held at 9:00 o’clock Tuesday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic church, Olean.
