Luther Edgerton Putnam, was born February 22, 1836 in Jersey Licking, OH to Rev. Charles Marsh Putnam and Abby Slocum Edgerton. He was a Civil War Veteran (92nd Ohio Infantry, Company F organized by his cousin Lt. Col. Douglas Putnam). Luther married Helen Sanford Whitehead (born 1836 to Dr. Ezekiel Whitehead and Hetty Thompson) in Jersey Licking, OH on March 29, 1858. Luther pioneered with Helen and his brother Henry Putnam from Jersey Licking, OH - where his family were founding fathers - to become one of the earliest landholders and settlers of Champaign County. Tragically, just two years later, when their first child Lee Francis was 3 months old, Helen passed away on August 28, 1860. She was only 24 years old. Luther married 2nd, Sarah Jane Martin (daughter of Rev. E.R. Martin). They went on to have 8 children, 6 of whom survived to adulthood. Luther passed away on October 29, 1900. Luther, Helen and Sarah Jane are all buried together at Willowbrook Cemetery in Fisher, IL.


Daughter of Luther and Sarah Jane, Helen Sanford Putnam Starr (1868-1963) is buried in Londonderry, VT (Memorial ID 243036948).


Daughter of Luther and Sarah Jane, Clara Catherine Putnam (1871-1961) lived for many years in Colorado with her sister Abby. she died in Los Angeles, CA where according to Census records she was serving as a hotel maid. She never married.
