Nellie M. Payne, 91, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Born April 30, 1899, in Knoxville, Tenn., she had lived here since 1957.
On June 15, 1919, in Knoxville, as Nellie Cox, she married George W. Payne. He died Sept. 15, 1982. Surviving are seven daughters, two sons,34 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and 2 sisters and 1 brother. A daughter preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
Nellie's mother was first wife of John Henry Cox, Margaret Elizabeth Swanner, they married June 2 1898 Knox County. "Lizzy's" burial location is unknown as of yet (Oct 2016). Lizzy passed between 1900 and 1903. Still searching for her resting place.
