George W. Payne, 92, died unexpectedly at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a retired foreman from Orr Felt and Blanket Co. of Piqua, Ohio. He had worked and supervised in the wollen mills from Tennessee, Wisconson, LaPorte IN and Ohio since 1919. His huge vegetable gardens and bee hives were unmatched in harvest and family fame. He was born Oct. 19, 1889, in Swain County, N.C. and lived in South Bend since 1957, coming from Piqua. On June 15, 1919, in Knoxville, Tenn., he married Nellie Cox, who survives. Also surviving are eight daughters,two sons, 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a sister, and two brothers.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Weisheimer North Chapel, with Rev. Douglas F.C. Keffer, pastor of West Side Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

George first married Myrtle McCulley in March 1913. They had 3 children, first, a set of twins; Carl and Charles who passed as infants; then Maxie. Myrtle passed when Maxie was only 2yrs old. Myrtles memorial # is 149305322.
