Edith was the last surviving member of the Napoleon High School class of 1935. She married Edward F. Spangler in 1938 and he preceded her in death in 1993. Edith worked as a press operator for Clevite-Harris Corporation, retiring in 1979 after 21 years of service. In 2004, Edith was honored as Senior of the Year by the Henry County Senior Center. She was described as a "live wire", full of fun and energy as she spent countless hours as a volunteer at the Senior Center. Among her many interests and hobbies, Edith enjoyed painting landscapes, doing crafts, and playing cards. Edith was a lifetime member of the Napoleon American Legion Auxiliary, AMVETS, and the Napoleon VFW Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of St. John Episcopal Church in Napoleon, where she served in many capacities.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Sandra Sweinhagen of Hudson, Michigan; son, Jack (Marjorie) Spangler of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Ann (Don II) Curry, Ron (Sheryl) Sweinhagen Jr., Keith (Amy) Sweinhagen, Susan (Chad) Spahr, Kathi (Trever) Zimmerman, Roushawn Saunders, Rosanne (Brent) Watson, Patrick (Brittney) Spangler, and Regenia Spangler;22 great-grandchildren;4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Edward F. Spangler; daughter, Nancy Lee Spangler; granddaughter, Rachel Wheeler; great-grandson, Bane Zimmerman; 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19th from 2pm to 8 pm at Walker-Hoening Mortuary, 333 West Main Street, Napoleon, Ohio. Visitation will continue at Walker-Hoening Mortuary on Friday, January 20 from 11:30 am until the time of Funeral Services at 12:30pm. Entombment will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance, Ohio. Memorial donations are suggested to the Henry County Senior Center, Hudson Michigan EMS, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
