Former Pikes Peak region resident Joe Cocomise, passed away in Chicago, Illinois on May 7th 2010. Joe was born February 6, 1921 to Salvatore and Mary Grace (Imbragulio) Cocomise. As a young man Joe worked along with his family in the grocery business in Chicago. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, Joe resided in Florida where he operated a hydroponics tomato farm. In 1973 he moved to Divide, Colorado. For many years he owned and operated the Divide General Store, a quaint country market known throughout the region for it's quality produce and meats. His business became a destination for many in the Pikes Peak region. Customers knew they would find good food and a dose of humor and friendship from the proprietor “Coco Joe�. In the mid 80's Joe moved to Colorado Springs where he continued to be active in the Grocery and Produce industry. He was a well-known fixture at area Farmer's Markets selling fruit, vegetables and most notably roasted chili peppers. He often contributed food, and his time to local food banks, and the Marian House Soup Kitchen. Those who loved him will always remember his fabulous cooking, his knack for storytelling and his hospitable heart. Joe returned to Chicago a few years ago to be with his extended family. Left to cherish Joe's memory are brother Bill and sister Mary both of the Chicago area, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. His parents, siblings Sam, John, Anne and Rose preceded him in death. A private service was held, internment at the Divide Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Marian House Soup Kitchen, 14 W. Bijou Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903
