Tyringham Man Missing
Was on Transport to Greenland in February

TYRINGHAM---Guy Tinker Roberts, 35, only son of Mrs. Lura T. Roberts has been reported missing by the War Department. He was en route to Greenland on a transport with 150 other men and was to be engaged in defense work. He left his home Jan. 19 and the next day sailed from an unannounced point. The first message received about him was on Feb. 16 reporting him missing. His mother and his wife, the former Louise Bowman live in Tyringham. His father, Herbert Roberts, died in 1911.

He was almost certainly aboard the USS Dorchester, which was en route from St. John's, Newfoundland to Narsarssuak, Greenland during the time frame he was reported missing. It was torpedoed 3 February 1943 by U-223. It carried over 900 passengers and crew, including civilian contractors and troops.
