Richard L. "Papoo" Reed Sr., 64, of Martinsville, died Monday, June 6, 2011, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.

He was the husband of Shirley Reed of the home.

Bassett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

The funeral for Richard L. "Papoo" Reed Sr., 64, of Martinsville, who died Monday, June 6, 2011, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bassett Funeral Service. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of Elizabeth Reed-Eanes, 146 Davis Road, Martinsville.

Reed was born July 23, 1946, in Sissonville, W.Va., to Enos Brisendine and Ernie Elizabeth Canter Reed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Lee Roy Reed; two brothers, John F. Reed and Bob Reed; and three sisters, Erma Lee Harding, Phyllis J. Davis and Edna Westfall.

He served in the Army as a tank driver and expert rifleman, and he retired from Erath Veneer in Rocky Mount.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Hill Reed; two sons, Richard L. Reed Jr. and Jim Reed, both of Martinsville; four daughters, Elizabeth Reed-Eanes of Martinsville, Wilma Reed of Cana, Sharon Reed Manuel and Sheila Reed Jones, both of Galax; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Richard L. "Papoo" Reed Sr., 64, of Martinsville, who died June 6, 2011, was held Thursday at Bassett Funeral Service with Minister Tim Hunt officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Richard L. Reed Jr., Austin Reed, Robbie Gauldin, David Hill, Scott Mitchell, Chris Hill, Jim Reed, David Eanes, Shane Gwynn and Robert Reed.
