John Wells moved from North Carolina to Georgia to Texas. Census records throughout the 1800s show him to be in Guadalupe Valley, Texas, where he was listed at times as a 'surveyor' and later as a 'farmer.' He was described by one of his grand-nephews as "both lawyer and engineer." In old letters recently found, his writings show that he was very well-educated.

Census records list his family as his wife, Marsha/Marcia (b. abt. 1836 in Florida) and six children -- James Metherges, Jane E. [Smith], Richard M., George, Laura L., and Nancy Minerva Wells [Bibb].

His last known surviving letters from Texas to North Carolina were dated in 1876.
