At the age of 21, while working in Nashville as a telephone operator, he enlisted in April 14, 1904 for three years service in the Army. He was described as 5'6, dark brown eyes and dark brown hair. He served in the 27th Infantry, Companies M and G, and was honorably discharged as a private at Fort Monroe, Virginia, on April 13, 1907.
After his service, he took an operator job in Columbus, Ohio, where he married Florence P. Garitson on July 6, 1907. He soon took a position with the railroad, from which he retired.
Joe and Florence raised a large family, at least eleven children.
