Herschel Sherlin
Hershel E. Sherlin, 81, of the Mt. Harmony community near Niota, died Thursday morning, May 12, 2011, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Bryant Sherlin and Arlie Dalton Coffee. He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He owned and operated an Exxon station in downtown Athens for several years, and also served as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service out of the Athens Post Office. He was a farmer in the Mt. Harmony community for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Rogers Sherlin of Athens; two daughters and one son-in-law, Gail and Lowell Axley of Athens, and Julie Sherlin of Chattanooga; one son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Nancy Sherlin of Athens; one granddaughter, Barbara Amy and her husband, Jason; three grandsons, Curtis Axley, Ben Axley and his wife, Jennifer, and Clint Sherlin; one sister, Charlotte Swaggerty of Knoxville; and one half-sister and her husband, Gwen and Robert Lewis of Niota.
Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Hammonds officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Harmony Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Martin Dain, Duncan Bennett, Randy Dalton and grandsons, Curtis Axley, Ben Axley and Clint Sherlin. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 130 County Road 362, Niota, TN; 37826, or American Red Cross, Hiwassee Chapter, P.O. Box 2314, Cleveland, TN 37320.
