The Haddam Clipper-Leader Sept. 10, 1908, p. 1

Again it is the unpleasant duty of the CLIPPER to record the passing away of one of Haddam's most respected citizens, Mrs. Clara Canfil, who died at her home in this city Monday morning at 3 o'clock. She had been an invalid for several years, but had not been seriously ill but a few days.
Mrs. Canfil, whose maiden name was Clara Eastwood, was born in Susex, England, January 14, 1851. When but a young girl, with her father, Thomas Eastwood, she and her two sisters came to America, locating first at Albia, Iowa. Later her father moved to Kansas, taking up a claim near Hubbell, Neb. And while living on that farm, she met Orson S. Canfil, who, on December 21, 1871, claimed her as his bride. She came with him to Haddam, which place has been her home ever since, either in the home in the northeast part of town or on the farm a mile southwest. To her and Mr. Canfil were born five children, three girls and two boys. Two of these died in infancy.
Her father died many years ago and is buried in the Hubbell cemetery. Her mother and one sister were buried in England before her coming to America. She has two sisters yet living, Mrs. Samuel B. Douglas of Narka, and Mrs. Dan E. Miller of Denver. Her step-mother, Mrs. Eastwood is living in Scotland.
Her three children, Orson, Mrs. J. E. Janeway of Haddam, and Mrs. H. J. Matteson of Bartlesville, Okla., were with her at the time of her death. Mrs. Miller arrived in time to attend the funeral, as did H. J. Matteson. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Douglas of Narka, were also at the funeral.
Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday at 10 o'clock, under the direction of Rev. T. J. Strickler, after which the remains were interred in the family plot in the city cemetery.
