John J. Major died 09 Nov 1958 at Garland, Texas. He suffered a heart attack.
Mr. Major operated the J. J. Major Packing Company in Kansas City. In 1940, he and Lawrence D. Snow formed the Major and Snow Meat Company, a wholesale meat business in Independence, Missouri. The partnership dissolved in 1951. John moved to Garland, Texas, where he was in the investment and loan business.
Mr. Major was survived by his wife, Mrs. Vivian Major of the home; a daughter, Mrs. L. E. Piper, Pine Bluff, AR; a sister, Mrs. Jessie M. Moore of Independence, MO; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lee Major in 1950; his parents; and an infant son, John E. Major.
The Majors lived across the street from President Truman's Summer White House. Mrs. Majors was known for providing the newsmen cold drinks and hot coffee and opened their home to the newsmen to freshen up. In 1949, the newsmen presented Mrs. Majors with a centerpiece for her dining room table.
