OBITUARY OF THOMAS BENTON COFFMAN
------------------------
TIMES-TRIBUNE, Beaver City, Nebraska
Friday, November 20, 1919 pg. 1
------------------------
Beaver City and the entire community was grieved last Friday morning, when it was learned that Thomas B. Coffman, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, had passed away during the preceding night.
Thomas Benton Coffman was born in Augusta County, Va., October 15, 1833 and died at Beaver City, Nebr. November 14, 1919, aged 86 years and 30 days. He was united in marriage at Middleburg, Iowa November 25, 1856, to Miss Martha J. Huff. To them were born nine children, four of whom died in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Sadie Mosher, who died about ten years ago. With the faithful wife of his young manhood and declining years, four of the children survive him, being Edgar C. Coffman of Keota, Iowa; Charles B. Coffman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Samuel H. Coffman and Mrs. Anna Freeman of Beaver City.
Mr. and Mrs. Coffman came to Nebraska in 1886 and located on a farm near Oxford. In 1905 they removed to Beaver City, where they have since resided. Mr. Coffman was a member of the Baptist church, having given his life to the Lord Jesus while yet a young man in the state of Virginia. He was the honored and beloved superintendent of the Zion Baptist Sunday School in Iowa for many years. When he came to Nebraska he placed his membership in the Oxford Baptist church remaining loyal and true to the faith until called home. It is fitting to say here that Mr. Coffman had two brothers who were Baptist ministers and he was not alone in the blessed work of the Lord. Few live as long as Mr. Coffman and few have lived as well.
Had Mr. Coffman lived until November 25, he and Mrs. Coffman would have celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary. For more than three score years - nearly the allotted life of man - they journeyed together. At the time of their fifty - eighth anniversary, November 25, 1914, the event was celebrated at their home in Beaver City where all of their children and families were present. At that time the Times-Tribune said: "Mr. Coffman cast his first ballot in 1855, and voted for Buchannan for president in 1856, and has always taken an active interest in politics. Both he and Mrs. Coffman are well read on all subjects of human interest and take a keen delight in the best literature. Although they have passed four score years, they are both in splendid physical condition and will no doubt live to celebrate many more happy returns of the day."
Funeral services were held at the late home in Beaver City Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock and on account of the weakened condition of his faithful companion, they were brief. They were conducted by Rev. William W. Stanley, of the Christian Church of Beaver City, after which the remains were tenderly and reverently laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery to await the dawn of a new day.
