Peter Wittenberg was the great grandson of Henry Michael Wittenberg. Henry arrived in America on Sep 5th, 1751 at the port of Philadelphia, PA aboard the ship "Shirley".

After living in Pennsylvania for about 10 years, Henry moved his family to Western North Carolina, where he passed away in January 1767.

William, one of Henry's sons stayed in the area of Lincoln and Burke Counties, or modern day Catawba and Alexander Counties. In the soutwest corner of Alexander County lies a small town of Wittenberg, North Carolina. This is where William's son Daniel settled.

Daniel ran a mill in Wittenberg, N.C. Daniel had applied for and was granted a U.S. Post office permit at the site of his mill. The mill was also used during the Civil War to muster troops heading for battle.

Daniel died early 1865. David and Peter Wittenberg were Daniel's only sons. David would stay at Wittenberg, North Carolina and raise his family there, while Peter left the family home with his wife, Agnes Mira Settlemire and began heading west in the late 1840's.

Peter and Agnes were found living in Claiborne County, Louisiana on the 1850 U.S. Census. The value of his plantation in Louisiana was valued at $2,000 on the census.

There is significant information pointing to a timeline in their travels to California. On the 1860 U.S. Census, Peter was now in Olema, Marin, California. The children born to Peter and Agnes tell the story. Henry R. Wittenberg was born in Louisiana and listed as 12 years old on the 1860 Census. That means they were living in Louisiana in 1848. The next child listed on the 1860 Census was John J. Wittenberg listed as being 10 years old having been born in Texas. This puts them living in Texas late in 1850. The next child listed on the 1860 Census is William B. Wittenberg. William was born in 1852 in California. So this completes the picture of their travels. They made it to California by 1852.

The first place they settled was at the ranch in Olema, California- on what is now known as Mt. Wittenberg.

Peter's family lived on the mountain until 1868, when at that time they moved down to San Luis Obispo County, California, where Peter lived in Upper Arroyo Grande, in the location of modern day Lake Lopez.

The area is known as Wittenberg Canyon where Peter lived near his son Newton. Peter died in 1884 and was buried at the IOOF Cemetery in San Luis Obispo.
