Daniel ran a mill in Wittenberg, N.C. Daniel had applied for and was granted a U.S. Post office permit at the site of his mill. The mill was also used during the Civil War to muster troops heading for battle.
Daniel died early 1865. David and Peter Wittenberg were Daniel's only sons. David would stay at Wittenberg, North Carolina and raise his family there, while Peter left the family home with his wife, Agnes Mira Settlemire and began heading west in the late 1840's.
