Joseph grew up in Kenner and at the age of 17 years enlisted in Marine Reserves 30
November 1958. After completing his reserve obligations Joseph enlisted in the Marines and went into active duty 16 August 1963, at a Baton Rouge Recruiting Office.
When Joseph arrived in Vietnam he was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Lima Company was participating in Operation Hastings when they were engaged by hostile forces, at Razorback Ridge (Hill 362) and12 kilometers west of Cam Lo. Lt Kopfler died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and head from hostile
small arms fire during the encounter against hostile forces.
Lt Kopfler and 27 Marines lost their lives.
Tour of duty unknown.
He served his country for 6 years.
Survived by his parents, Joseph S Jr and Ruby C Kopfler of 1666 Lauradale Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana, and a sister.
