The son of James Wilkins and Mary and Johnson Wilkins. His father died young and his mother married again to Thomas Griffin.James enlisted in the Civil War Nov. 15 1861 at McLeansboro, Il.He served in the 56th Illinois Infantry and mustered in Feb. 27th 1862. Described as 5'5" blond hair & blue eyes.He mustered out Aug 12 1865.
He married Agnes S Evans Dec 30 1866 and they had 12 children.
