Thomas McDonald was the son of John McDonald III and Sallie McCoy Davidson McDonald.

He was named after his father John's older brother Thomas McDonald - and should not be confused with him as he, too, was the son of a John McDonald (II) who in turn named him after his older brother Thomas!

He was born and raised on his father's farm in Deer Creek Township, Madison County, Ohio but moved to Iowa as a young man with a group of extended family in the early 1850s. He was married in 1854 in Muscatine, Iowa to one of the Ohio girls, Ann Elizabeth Byers, and they lived the rest of their lives as farmers in Iowa.

Thomas and Ann Eliza were the parents of Clara Albertine b. 1856; William Arthur b. 1858; Edgar Byers b. 1860; and Lois Anna b. 1861.
