George Bennett grew to adulthood on his parents' farm at La Center, Washington, and was educated in the country schools near the family home. As a young man he resided briefly in central Oregon, where he prospected for gold. George later took up the well digging trade at Portland, Oregon. He and his wife, Rosie Peck, whom he married at Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, on April 24, 1890, had six children. George never remarried following Rosie's death from peritonitis at 32. He succumbed to heart disease at 70.
