1850 census Ohio, Boone, IL: Michael Detro (transcribed as Detoro), aged 38, bp Canada; Desdy, aged 32, bp Canada; Mary Jane aged 11, John aged 7; Euphema aged 2; and Adelaid aged 6 months -- all born IL.

"Michael Detro Jr. and his wife Desdemona formed the nucleus of a California-bound party leaving Iowa in 1859. Cross-country travel was not a new experience for the Detros. The couple, soon after their marriage about 1840, had moved with their infant daughter Mary Jane from New York to Illinois. They farmed near Elgin [Kane County] where John Charles, Euphemia Mallie, Desdemona and George Wallace were added to the family. They moved on into Iowa before their youngest child, Barton Detro, was born in 1856. As with countless other families, the pull of the frontier was too much for the Detros. In 1859 they packed their belongings once more, herded their milk cows together, hitched the oxen to the wagons and headed west. Several of Desdemona's brothers and a sister joined the party. These were Palmer Clark (possibly with a wife and family), Barton Clark, George Clark, and Mary Jane Clark. The last named had with her a three year old daughter, Alice Jane, a favorite with her little Detro cousins. Not to be confused with Desdemona's sister was Mary Jane Detro who had married in Iowa to Hod White. This new family was added to the caravan.

Title: Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763-1900.Lic. No. 2303.

[Note: There is a marriage record in Kane County, IL, between Mary Jane Detro and Thomas Crane February 13, 1855. Then there is a marriage record in Butte County between Horace White and M.J. Crane on June 23 1863, in Chico. Perhaps, Hod, is a nickname. This would appear to be one of those fortuitous finds, but to refute this scenario, there is a Mary Jane White buried in the Chico Cemetery, who died Aug. 11, 1874. Horace White appears in both the 1880 census Janesville, Lassen County as a wheel wright and then again in the 1900 census in French Gulch, Shasta County as a miner. Both times he lists himself as a widower, and in the 1900 census he states he had a marriage of 11 years duration. This timeframe fits the time between the marriage record of June 1863 to M.J. Crane and the death year of Mary Jane White, 1874.]
