He enlisted, 12/23/1864, as a private with the 29th Pennsylvania Infantry and ended his service, 7/17/1865. Levi joined the 29th during the siege of Savannah, GA and continued with the regiment through the Carolinas Campaign. He was present at Bennett's Place, Durham, NC for Johnston's surrender and marched with the 29th in the Grand Review of the Armies of the Union in Washington, D. C.
Levi married Louisa "Lucy" Cypher, 6/23/1864, in Dudley, PA. They had thirteen children together. Through the course of his life, Levi was employed as a carpenter, a blacksmith, wheelwright and undertaker.

Levi C. Reed, formerly of Dudley, Huntingdon County, died at his home in Minersville, Schuylkill County, on Sunday, August 15, aged 77 years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Company I, 29th Regiment Pa. Vol. His wife, four sons and seven daughters survive. One son, J. Bruce Reed, lives at Hopewell, and one daughter, Mrs. W. Whited, at Six Mile Run. Interment was made in the Dudley Cemetery, Revs. Carl M. Drake and J. R. Melroy officiating.
