Enlisted as a private with Co. H, 17th Wisconsin Infantry, on December 19, 1861; died of sunstroke at Corinth, Mississippi.

According to the Widow's Declaration for Army Pension completed by Sarah Ames, Ira died on 16 June 1862 from chronic diarrhea. She states it was in Corinth, TN, but Corinth is actually just across the border in Mississippi, where the Union Army had held the city under siege.
