Samuel W. Kowil, 76, of 93 Wildermere St., died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. He owned and operated the Fairview Market and Deli since 1972. He owned Kowil's Driving School in the early 1950s and also managed the former Poplar Markets for 25 years. Born in Monson, he lived in Springfield for 39 years and in Chicopee for the last four years. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 70 and a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church, both in Springfield. He leaves his wife, the former Aurore Lantaigne; two daughters, Joanne Stacey of Brunswick, Maine, and Nancy Gardell of Monson; and a granddaughter. A private funeral will be held Monday morning, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours at Gris Funeral Home are Sunday afternoon.
