Frances Mae "Franny" (Straight) Rickerl was a talented artist and an expert seamstress & tailor. She was a passionate supporter of education and career opportunities for women. From 1942 to 1980 she raised six children: two sons and four daughters. When her children were grown, she found great pleasure working in a pottery studio, camping and fishing in the Rockies with her husband, and traveling around the US.

After her husband's death she left Colorado and returned to Omaha, Nebraska. She survived him for over twenty years, during which time she enjoyed being near her sisters, several of her children and her grandchildren. Competent and undaunted, she was still taking art classes and renovating her house throughout her 70s. After she turned 80, her health began to decline and she moved in with her eldest daughter. She spent the last two years of her life in an assisted living home and died instantly of a stroke, just two days before a planned celebration for her 88th birthday.
