Lawndale, NC – Emory Allen, 84, of Lawndale, NC went to sleep in his home and woke up in the presence of his precious Lord on Thanksgiving evening, November 25, 2010, following an extended illness.
Born August 27, 1926 in Cayce, SC, Charles Emory Allen (known as Emory to his family and friends) was the youngest of three children. During his youth, his family relocated to Miami, FL, where he went on to graduate from Miami Edison Senior High School. Being extremely patriotic, Emory joined the U.S. Army near the end of World War II. He married the love of his life, Wanda Lee Trent Allen, on October 25, 1948. The union was blessed with a son and two daughters. Answering Uncle Sam's call, he returned to the U.S. Army for the Korean War, shipping out the day his first child was born. Except for the two leaves of absence during which he served in the armed forces, Emory worked for the U.S. Postal Service, starting in his teens and culminating with his retirement in 1982 as Postmaster of Stuart, FL. He and Wanda moved to Lawndale upon his retirement from the Postal Service. He loved living in Cleveland County, often saying, "I wasn't born here, but I got here quick as what I could." Shortly after arriving in NC, Emory embarked on his second career. He was employed as an insurance agent for Western & Southern Life until his retirement in 1992, making numerous friends among his many clients and coworkers. Not one to be idle for long, he worked part time at the service station in Lawndale for a short while during his retirement and later spent a few years working full time in the sports department of the Wal-Mart store in Shelby. Emory was outgoing and enjoyed people, never meeting a stranger. Any endeavor he chose to pursue, no matter how great or small, he tackled with gusto. It's not surprising to those who knew him that one of his favorite Bible verses was Colossians 3:23, "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." He loved God and openly shared with others his personal relationship with his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Emory is preceded in death by his parents, Leila Mae Crapps Allen and Robert C. Allen, and his brother, Robert Lewis Allen.
Emory is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Wanda Allen of Lawndale; one son, Charles "Chuck" Allen, Jr. of Lawndale; two daughters; Janet Lerner and husband Nathan of Miami, FL and Judy Mendez and husband Frank of Lawndale; five grandchildren; Blake Barnett and wife Jennifer of Fresno, CA, Joy Barnett of Pompano Beach, FL, Cristine Ackley and husband Ryan of Gainsville, FL, and Victoria Mendez and David Mendez both of Lawndale; and a sister, Gladys Ward of Florence, SC.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 5 to7 p.m. Saturday at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.
