Obituary: San Antonio (TX) Express-News, 3 Nov 2010:

Colonel Charles Earl (Chuck) Abbey flew thru the clouds to heaven on Oct 30, 2010. An American hero, he had a distinguished Air Force career. He was a fighter pilot in 3 wars, and he rose from a 2-day old adoptee to full Colonel with a Masters Degree and multiple Bachelors Degrees. (His first solo flight was at age 16 in the crop fields of Kansas.) Retiring early to enjoy life, he did so by building and flying his own experimental aircraft, hay farming, playing golf, riding his horses on his ranches and sail boating. Also during his life he was a founding member of the Armed Forces Surf Team while on tour in Hawaii, San Marcos Airport Commissioner for 3 years, a Mason of Newton Lodge #142 in Newton, Kansas for over 70 years and Lions Club of Dripping Springs. He spent his most joyous last years going on 14 cruises and other trips together with his four loving daughters; Jean Barnett, Joette Davis (Jim), Lori Abbey-MacDonald (Neil MacDonald), and Jamie Price (Keith). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 2 more on the way. He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Hope Abbey (Jantzen), his parents Ethel and Norris Daugherty, and father Earl Abbey, son-in-law Robert Barnett, grandson Walker Barnett and grandson-in-law James Miley. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to charities of your choice in his name.
