Rode with 3d Texas Cavalry CSA in the Civil War and engaged in 72 battles. 3d Texas was part of Texas Brigade under General Sul Ross future governor of Texas. Final battle was Nashville under Nathan Bedford Forrest and was paroled in Mississippi. He established this cemetery on the property he and his wife Mollie Hunter Ray inherited from William H. Hunter.
