Jewell County Library Files: C.H. MODLIN PASSES
Chalmers Hyatt, son of Elias and Lydia Modlin, was born in Peoria City, Polk county, Iowa, March 27, 1868, and passed to the Great Beyond April 29, 1929, aged 71 years, 1 month 3 days.
Mr. Modlin came to Kansas in November 1878, purchased the place known as the John Engel farm, later selling the place. He then bought a farm south of Burr Oak where he lived until moving to Burr Oak, where he spent the rest of his life.
Mr. Modlin was united in Marriage with Emily J. Myerly February 23, 1888, she passing away September 27, 1914. Mr. Modlin has since continued to live in Burr Oak.
For 31 years he had been connected with the White Hardware Co., having been a stockholder and on the board of directors all these years and taking an active part in the business. Mr. Modlin's activities in business so many years have made him a wide circle of friends who will greatly miss his advice and able assistance both in and without the institution.
Mr. Modlin possessed the rare virtue of staunch loyalty to relatives and friends while at a retiring nature, he was greatly admired and sought after for his sterling qualities of genuineness and sound advice. His love of children, whom he delighted to have about him, and of pets, portrayed his gentle nature and love of companionship.
He leaves to mourn his going two sisters, a number of nephews and nieces and other distant relatives in all of whom he was deeply interested, and a host of friends who will keenly feel their loss in his passing and miss his companionship and kindly advice.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Brethren church, by L. B. Wagoner, and burial made in the Burr Oak cemetery.
